The Association of Field Ornithologists (AFO) strongly endorses efforts to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion in the field of ornithology and the pastime of birding. The recent decision by the American Ornithological Society to change all eponymous bird names caused a stir in much of the ornithological community. We have had many discussions among AFO members about these changes and some AFO members are strongly in favor of such changes. It is also clear that some AFO members question whether changing all eponymous bird names will have the effect of truly making ornithology more inclusive. As AFO’s leadership, we hope that the process of name changes will be measured, deliberate, and appropriate, and we encourage open dialogue that considers all members of the community. To demonstrate our continued commitment to such dialogue, we plan to have a roundtable discussion on this topic at our joint meeting with Wilson Ornithological Society and the Society of Canadian Ornithologists next summer in Peoria, IL.
